Empowering the Voluntary Sector Workshop

The Empowering the voluntary sector project has been delivering training to third sector organisations to challenge unjust decision making processes since September 2006. This project now brings together Compact Advocacy, NAVCA and the Public Law Project to deliver training together with Compact and legal advice with the aim of strengthening the relationship between voluntary and community organisations and public bodies and significantly increases opportunities to influence decisions made by public bodies.

This workshop is open to all voluntary and community organisations, staff and trustees and also open to voluntary sector partners.

Introduction to public law

  • Working definition of public law
  • Public bodies and public functions
  • Working with the Compact
  • Legislation, regulations and guidance

Public Law wrongs

  • Illegality, unfairness, irrationality and maladministration

Compact non-compliance 

  • Comparison of national Compact with public law issues in order to identify points of synergy

Making a challenge

  • Decisions, actions and failures to act by a public body
  • Information gathering and problem analysis
  • Public law remedies
